Moved by the death of one of our long-standing Council Members and former Secretary, Professor Keith Jeffery, Council decided, in 2018, to offer fellowships to promising scholars, to help them, financially, and with expert mentoring, to develop a volume for the Society. We would like to thank all of those who applied for fellowships; we received an unexpectedly large number of well-thought out and interesting proposals. It was decided, given the quality of the applications and the healthy financial position of the Society, to appoint Dr.Aimée Fox and Dr.Edward Smalley to fellowships, for the following projects:

  • The Military Papers of Major-General Guy Dawnay, 1914-1919 edited byAimée Fox.
  • The Military Papers of Sir John Dill 1936-1941 edited by Edward Smalley.

We look forward to working with Aimée and Edward and plan to publish their volumes in due course.

CALL FOR NEW FELLOWSHIPS 2022

Moved by the death of our long-serving President, Professor Sir Michael Howard, the Army Records Society invites applications for at least one Army Records Society Fellowship. Fellowships will be held for three years and a bursary of £1,000 per annum, plus travel expenses of up to £2,000 per annum, will be payable to successful fellows. In return for this bursary, fellows will be expected to produce a volume of edited papers for publication by the Society. Those appointed to a fellowship will receive an academic mentor and full support through the publishing process. This scheme is most suitable for early career researchers.

The bulk of the Society’s published volumes deal with the period c.1850 to 1945. While we would welcome volumes covering this period, we would be particularly keen to award fellowships to those considering earlier or later periods. The term ‘Army’ is also understood in its widest sense and we would be most interested to see proposals concerning Colonial or Dominion Forces or amateur military units.

Those interested in applying for a fellowship should forward a curriculum vitae and an outline of their proposed volume, to the Chairman, Dr. Timothy Bowman: T.Bowman@kent.ac.uk. The outline of the proposed volume should discuss the importance of the topic under consideration and the key historiography relating to it, and provide an overview of the archival sources to be used. The proposal should be no more than 4,000 words in total, including any sample documents.

The deadline for proposals is midnight on the 5th September 2022. Those shortlisted may be asked for a sample of published or draft work and it is expected that interviews will be held, online, in late September.
